Getting to and Around Palmdale

Plan your journey to Palmdale and discover the easiest ways to explore the Antelope Valley, California’s High Desert and the surrounding Southern California region.

Palmdale is located approximately 60 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, on the southern edge of the Mojave Desert.

The city is accessible by car, train and regional transportation, making it a convenient destination for visitors exploring Southern California beyond the coast.

However, attractions throughout the Antelope Valley are spread across a large geographical area, so planning your transportation is important.

Flying to Palmdale

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a major arrival point for visitors travelling to Southern California.

From the airport, you can continue to Palmdale by rental car or a combination of public transportation and regional rail services.

Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is another option, particularly for domestic travellers.

It is located north of downtown Los Angeles and can provide a convenient starting point for a journey to the Antelope Valley.

Travelling by Car

California State Route 14 is the main highway connecting Palmdale with the Los Angeles region and neighbouring Lancaster.

Driving from downtown Los Angeles to Palmdale generally takes around one to one and a half hours without heavy traffic.

However, congestion and weather conditions can increase the journey time, particularly through the mountain passes.

If you are planning a longer road trip, Palmdale is a convenient stop when travelling towards the Mojave Desert and other High Desert destinations.

Travelling by Train

Metrolink’s Antelope Valley Line connects Palmdale with Los Angeles Union Station and several communities along the route.

Palmdale Transportation Center serves as the city’s main passenger rail station.

The train can be a practical alternative to driving, particularly if you are travelling between Palmdale and central Los Angeles.

Check the current timetable before planning your journey.

Getting Around Palmdale

Antelope Valley Transit Authority operates local and regional bus services throughout Palmdale, Lancaster and surrounding communities.

Taxis and rideshare services provide additional transportation options.

However, many attractions are located outside the main urban areas.

Do You Need a Car?

I recommend renting a car if you want to explore the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, nearby mountain areas or the wider Mojave Desert.

For a first visit, allow at least two days in Palmdale, with additional time if you are planning scenic drives and outdoor adventures.
